Saddle Height and Back Pain

I suffer from back problems and cycling has always left me in a certain amount of paind.
Around 8 weeks ago I put my saddle down about 2 inches and never bothered putting it back up. My back pain nearly completely went. Weirdly I didnt find it any harder on the climbs.
Last night I stuck the saddle back up to the proper height and it felt much more efficient for speed but after 8.5 miles (in 42 minutes) my back was playing up and continued to do so for the rest of the evening.
So i plan to just ride with the saddle lower ( though I dont have a black and white stripey top to wear ) but is this likely to have any long term consequences?

My front wheel on rocky/rooty climbs that is

Even bent so far forward over the stem that I feel like I could lick the floor if I felt like it I still end up pulling my front wheel up. Not so much of a problem if I'm unclipped since I end up standing there holding my bike vertically and just looking a bit of a prat, more annoying when I end up doing the superfast spazzy unclip to avoid going ar*e over t*t But unclipped I'm useless at sitting and spinning so end up getting off and walking, any tips?

Anyone got any tips for improving my tabletops, I have heard the 'try to get your top knee over the top tube so both knees are on the same side of the bike', should i be turning the bars or just pushing and pulling? Anything else that might help?

After discussions in Wales about braking, I realised I'd been using my middle finger to brake, even though I wasn't happy with the grip on the bars.
With my new bike and its fancy-pants adjustable reach levers, I've discovered index finger braking Feels soooo much more comfortable and safe.....

So, what do you do?

Ok so i've had my bike for nearly a year now but I have always had the niggling feeling that its not set up for me properly. Especially when climbing. I always seem to end up hunched over with my chin really low to the stem, however my front wheel always seems to skip about and i move from side to side on the trail.

I know it's a bit late to be asking these questions but without spending money on it is there any adjustments I can easily make to try and improve the ride?
