Tattoos
#1
Thinking about getting a bike related tattoo on my calf (not sure which one yet)

Anyone got any bike tattoos anywhere or got any neat ideas I could have done?

Ive seen some on google images that just look awful, such as a chainring, it just looks too cartoony/clip art, I want something a bit arty farty, something that looks impressive, I wanna look at it in 10/20/30/40 years time and still think, 'that really does look good!'

What's good to you might be awful to someone else get the pen and paper out draw something up and go from there, that's what i did and took age's to get it how i wanted it.  Don't care much if anyone else like's it i do.

i would offer some suggestions but i am firmly of the opinion tattoos are only meant for bikers and sailors.........

oh ok then for what its worth....

first off think carefully, tattoos are not like regular pictures and what may look good on a page may not translate well to the skin. You really need to discuss it with a decent tattooist, who will hopefully offer some good artistic suggestions and steer you away from the cliches.

Tattoos of peoples hobbies/interests are very hard to get right and often just dont work, of course that is just opinion and they may well mean the world to the owner, but the fact that you are finding it difficult to find anything that even offers the slightest inspiration kinda points to this being true.

Personally i think the only way to make a 'hobby' tattoo work is to make it a bit off the wall, SPD cleats on the bottom of your feet for instance, 'terminator' style tattoos showing pistons inside your calves would probably be the way i would go. Its not a bicycle picture and not everyone will get it, but other cyclists will and everyone else can just admire the art work. They are generally known as 'biomech' tattoos.

or something a bit more extreme <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.thearnoldfans.com/tattoos/166535546_826ccd4d49.jpg">http://www.thearnoldfans.com/tattoos/16 ... cd4d49.jpg</a><!-- m -->

Where you are going to put it is also a big consideration, not least because some places are far easier to have done than others, trust me, i have quite a lot of tattoos and some were proper painful.

just to add and as an additional thought, no matter what you get or who you get to do it, the ink will start to bleed in places by 10-20 years, and for sure after 40 years it will be looking tired.

Cheers for the thoughts, this is gonna sound uninventive after Sailor has already said it but I really like the idea of SPD cleats on the bottoms of my feet, not that Im gonna run into it head first but I think thats for me Smile

search 'steampunk' for some variations on a theme, retro-futuristic, coal fired artwork maybe?
Keep it foolish...
