Just looks dramatic, bits breaking and flying away is what take the energy out the impact, softer bendy bits like radiators and pipes etc give some "crush" space... the survival cell is important and I am in favour of banning open cars at endurance events because the closed cars are soooo much safer (and probably more cosy in the night rain - chance to find out would be a fine thing).
