Light musings
#1
Time for another "what light" thread, but in my defense - the others I found are pretty old and light technology is improving all the time...

I'm considering my options for upgrading my night riding lights.  These need to be suitable for singletrack and for the occasional overnight race.  I very much like to have plenty of light so I can really see where I'm going

I currently have a homemade halogen bar light which does a good job but is a bit temperamental.  This is paired with an Exposure Joystick with piggyback second LED which is rated at 280 lumens.  It is pretty good and lights the trail well, but not really quite as much as I'd like

I've seen a lot of talk about the Magicshine lights but know Hope always have good offerings.  I also like the idea of a wireless helmet light so the Exposure range interest me

Budget is as yet undecided, although I can't justify the £400 a light offerings I've seen

So what do people recommend for a helmet and bar light combo?

This looks decent and is made by a guy on STW...Smudge I think.

I think it is worth considering the current Magicshine type light too. Mine is 3 years old and still going strong.

Did that site used to have a very comprehensive list of beam shots of a nearly every current light available? I've seen one recently (only a few weeks ago at most) and now can't find it again! A thread on STW linked me to it at the time - was really informative!

I have the older model light from Smudge which I've been very pleased with and is still going strong.  When I had to send it back to him due to a fault with the charger he sent a new one out to me first so I wasnt without a light which was nice.  I cant say about either of the two new models he has this year but would happily recomend him.

Another very popular light on STW is the Gloworm X2, a very compact unit that chucks out a hefty chunk of light. for a reasonable price.  I'll have to see how kind the overtime fairies are though come payday lol

Torchy the battery boy used to have a big list of beam shots available, there was another site too but cant think of it for the life of me.

Blayne has demoed a set of these, I think with very good results. http://four4th.co.uk/

The guy who makes them had a demo at a couple of the Gorrick races.  I had a look and a chat with him.  They look really well made, have good output, and have a clever mounting system.

I have indeed demo'd & bought a four4th light. Its not the one in Blackers link but looks similar. Really really good quality light which I can highly recommend. Infact if I was just in the market for a bar light I would go the Four4th route for sure.

I'm in a bit of a quandary at the moment because I have two specific bar mounted lights (the four4th & a hope 4) but not a helmet light albeit I do use the Hope on my lid. Potentially I may sell either or both of the above to get a set of Ay Ups... decisions decisions
