I bought my MacBook 4 years ago and it still works brilliantly. Have a look at the mac refurb store - usually 20% ish off and full warranty.

Ben your comment is a bit rich considering the endless amounts of new bike threads you post.

Whatever you get, I'd recommend getting it with an SSD (Solid State Drive).  They make much more difference to performance than a processor or even RAM upgrade.  I had one put in my 2.5yr old i7 laptop, and the difference was night and day when comparing things like boot time, resume time, and application load time.  They also have no moving parts, so are more robust for portable use.  The only downside is they are pretty pricey, especially at higher capacities.

I also don't get the Apple thing for home users. They are undoubtedly very good but the prices are hilarious.

Mike check on hotukdeals. plenty of good deals posted on there.

Thanks guys, things like i3 vs i5 processors and ssd hard drive are good to know about. I'd like to future proof as much as possible by getting something fairly decent but am ruling out macs simply due to cost. Annoyingly I also need something with a cd drive as my course requires this and I don't want to carry a separate plug in one. I have a very computer techy buddy who tells me there's new and exciting stuff due to be released in a couple of months time, this will reduce the cost of current stuff considerably. Maybe I put this off for a little longer.

Then ask all the same stupid questions again.

I got so far as reserving the g6 last night before having a rethink. Argh!

Deal! I think

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00D9QFXUE/ref=nosim

Price shows as £600, but look on the right of the screen where it says "more buying options" and it adds to the basket at £399.

Apparently not the fastest processor in the world.
